I own a pair of cockatiels. Got them about 2 months back. It’s a male and female. Bought them together. Not clipped their wings and don’t intend to. I want to know.. how can I get close to my birds. They eat from my hand.. but only come to me for food.. not otherwise.. it’s not like I call them and they come flying to me.. I would very much like that to happen.. so how can I make it happen. I didn’t want to get one bird cos I was told and also read that having a pair is better for the birds. So they have company.. now they live each other’s company alot and are happy with each other.. what do I do to bond with them so that they come to me and see me as one of their own…

Hope you are doing good. I need some help regarding the behaviour of my male cockatiel.

I have a pair of cockatiels. Grey – Male , Albino – Female. Both are very good pair ,mating pair too.
Both are totally tamed.
My concern is, albino gives her head for a scratch to the grey bowing her head. And grey instead of scratching it starts plucking the feathers of albino neck and head. It’s been almost 8-9 months I bought them. They were together for around 4-5 months in a large cage. Earlier grey used to preen or scratch her head when she approached. But now he plucks her neck and head features. I separated them since 4 months but kept 2 cages beside each other so that they are in contact. Another thing is I will let them out together . Also will put my grey cockatiel back to big cage at night time where albino resides. And separate him by early morning which is a routine. I wanted back to see them together all time in my big cage. Is there any way to avoid my male grey cockatiel plucking his mate feather?? Please help out.
Some of the local bird keepers say it’s due to sexual frustration. I partially agree that. When I leave them together , I could see them enjoying their mating process.
Well when it comes to diet , below is their chart
Morning : Veggies ( Beetroot, Carrots, Greens, Sprouts, Baby corn) Every Day.
Afternoon : normal corn every day will be kept in cage
Evening : when let them out of cage , give them zupreem pellets around 10-20 for each as a treat
Night – Millets with crushed pellets.

Weekly once fed with small piece of Apple and Almond.
The cages always have cuttle bone and mineral block. Along with that I give vitamins supplement daily mixed in water.
Please guide me and let me know if I missing something.

Thanks

Your this article has helped me a lot understand my cockatiel and inspired me to take more care of my birdie. As you said, my cockatiel is full of love towards me and my kids.
