I am getting ready to welcome a cockatiel into my home. I have a flight cage and several different size perches made from manzanita. I have a coco nut house for privacy. several bowls to sit on the side of the cage for food. I have different kinds of toys to rotate in and out so he will not get board. I have a cage cover and will get a bird light to make sure it gets the rights amounts of the correct spectrum. I want a hand raised male so I can teach it to sing and perhaps talk? I am not sure this can happen. Can it become potty trained? I welcome any and all information you offer so I can be the best bird friend I can possibly be. There is a bird vet nearby and I am waiting to see if Pet Emporium gets any birds in soon. Any suggestions??

Hey Shelly,

thank you so much for reaching out.
Since your Cockatiel has lost her partner, it sounds a little bit like she is using the mirror as a replacement now. This can be pretty dangerous and even lead to psychological problems in your bird.
I highly recommend that you read this article: Are mirrors bad for parrots?

The article will show what good and bad behavior looks like when it comes to birds and mirrors.

If your dog is not aggressive/ has not the urge to hunt smaller animals, I don’t see a problem. However, as I haven’t seen the two, I can’t really rate the situation. Monitor the two closely when you let them spend time with each other. Especially since your dog is blind on one eye, he might startle when a little bird lands on him and he can’t see what it is that lands on him.

Hope this helps, Shelly!

Let me know if you have any questions,

Pierre
