Uploads without licence
[edit]About 3/4 of the permissions we receive from France and Spain refer to images without licence tag. This means considerable extra work for VRT, because we need to remove the complaint from the User:AntiCompositeBot/NoLicense and add the appropriate licence each time after having checked and approved the permission.
This has been going on for months now. Is there really nothing that can be done about it? It should be prevented that files get uploaded without licence tag. Mussklprozz (talk) 10:26, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
- The problem is that we have so many accepted licenses that having a filter to prevent this is not really possible. If we decide that new users are only allowed to use the regular cc licenses we could easily create a filter. GPSLeo (talk) 10:40, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
- How about a filter that forbids to leave the licence empty? This would eliminite 80% of the problem cases, since most users decide for cc-by-sa anyway. Mussklprozz (talk) 12:26, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
- I'd suggest not to solve this by edit filter but by changing the upload interface. But it has to be found out at first which of the dozen ways for uploading creates this problem. Krd 12:46, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
- It seems to be the upload wizard. See e.g. File:Laura Urbina.jpg and File:Jorge León Gustà.jpg. --Mussklprozz (talk) 18:48, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, the issue comes from the Upload Wizard. I mentioned that a few months back, and I am surprised that it has not been fixed yet. Yann (talk) 19:27, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, the bug that selecting the permission option removes the license is still present. Just tested here File:Testfile2.png. @Sannita (WMF) could you have a look why this is still not resolved? GPSLeo (talk) 20:32, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
- FWIW, on April 13 of this year, I edited Commons:Uploading works by a third party to describe the necessary workaround for this on uploads, because Sannita let me know he did not expect the fix to occur promptly. I still have no idea why a fix to this would be difficult. - Jmabel ! talk 21:50, 12 September 2025 (UTC)
- @GPSLeo Unfortunately, the Structured Content team is no longer active, and it is still unclear who owns UploadWizard in the latest re-organization. I'll keep pushing for a solution, if you would be so kind to send me the Phab ticket, I can try to find someone to work on it. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 12:39, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
- The ticket should be phab:T391600. And the WMF did drop the maintenance of a core tool again? Is there an official statement why this happened? This is exactly what was the main criticism by the community in the open letters and also in the community call series. GPSLeo (talk) 14:29, 13 September 2025 (UTC)
- @GPSLeo AFAIK an announcement on Commons is in the making, but I have no news on when it will be published. About the ticket, I reached out to the devs, and they have it on their rader, but it's going to take at least another couple of weeks before it gets addressed, due to other priorities at the moment. I'll keep you posted, but please feel free to ping me here or in private about it, just to be sure it doesn't slip off my mind. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 14:58, 17 September 2025 (UTC)

- @Sannita (WMF): is there any way volunteers can work on the Upload Wizard? - Jmabel ! talk 19:51, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Jmabel I'm afraid I don't have the answer to that. I'm pushing one team to adopt this bug and solving it, but so far no luck. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 11:50, 12 November 2025 (UTC)
- @Sannita (WMF): is there any way volunteers can work on the Upload Wizard? - Jmabel ! talk 19:51, 11 November 2025 (UTC)
- FWIW, the problem and the workaround are documented at COM:THIRD#How they can grant a license (and how you upload) step 12. If you need to give people an explanation, it is probably better to aim them there than to custom-write an explanation in each case. It would also be great if we could start doing translations of COM:THIRD: it seems to be stable and heavily used. - Jmabel ! talk 20:20, 10 November 2025 (UTC)

You'd still have to insert the license, but it's an easy fix to automate one step. I'd have to look into the gadget to see if a dropdown with common licenses could be added somewhere. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 13:23, 27 January 2026 (UTC)- The existing code has virtually no code comments and the structure is too different from what I'm used to. Questions about ticket access
[edit]1. Is ticket access logged? (e.g. "$user viewed $ticket_number at $timestamp")
2. If it is, who can review that log, and does it get reviewed regularly?
3. Is ticket access at all ratelimited? In other words, would a single account have the technical ability to scrape all tickets in existence in a short period of time?
I know you swear an oath etc, that's not what I'm concerned about. This question is about the abilities of the system. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 14:37, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- I presume the log can be viewed by anyone if CU is any indication Trade (talk) 19:05, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- @Josve05a: --Trade (talk) 20:22, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
- As a regular VRT agent, I do not have access to any log showing that another user has merely viewed a ticket. I can only see logs for explicit actions taken on a ticket, such as following it, adding notes, merging, forwarding it, etc. I cannot speak for what logs are available to VRTS administrators beyond what is visible to regular agents, so I will leave that part of the question to them to answer if needed. Regarding rate limiting, the system is generally quite slow in practice, but this appears to be due to overall performance and not to any per-account access throttling that I am personally aware of, but for operational security reasons, details about technical safeguards against large-scale access or scraping beyond what we "mere volunteer agents" have access to or knowledge about are unlikely to be discussed publicly. --Jonatan Svensson Glad (talk) 20:25, 27 January 2026 (UTC)

Was genau ist hier durch das VRT-Ticket abgedeckt? Etwa nur das Recht des Fotografen am Foto? Was ist mit dem abgebildeten Werk? GerritR (talk) 20:42, 28 January 2026 (UTC)
Krd 06:06, 4 February 2026 (UTC)
Randy Lennox
[edit]
Please see User talk:Alexis Jazz#NoIndex Request for Derivative Crop.
This was the result of this DR.
I offered to add noindex to the filepage if CJMiller71 would ask VRT to confirm on-wiki that CJMiller71 does indeed represent (or is) Randy Lennox. Instead of getting confirmation from a VRT agent, CJMiller71 points to ticket:2026021310007032 and says "The VRT agent said for you to do it". This is not answering my question: does CJMiller71 represent Randy Lennox?
- If you were able to confirm CJMiller71 represents Lennox and you can confirm this on-wiki, please do, and I'll add noindex.

- If you were able to confirm CJMiller71 represents Lennox but you can't confirm this on-wiki, please add noindex yourself.

- If you were unable to confirm that CJMiller71 represents Lennox, but you told them I should add noindex anyway, ????

- If you were unable to confirm that CJMiller71 represents Lennox, and you didn't tell them I should add noindex, please ask them to stop lying.

Thank you. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 17:29, 15 February 2026 (UTC)
- VRT cannot confirm identities, and adding noindex to pages is not within our job description. Please clarify this without VRT. Krd 19:55, 15 February 2026 (UTC)

- Are mostly nonsense. But this discussion does not lead to a solution for the original question. Do we have any policy to apply noindex to files? Does it make sense to create a precedent? Is user verification required or reasonable? These are all questions out of VRT business. Krd 15:42, 16 February 2026 (UTC)
- If CJMiller71's statement is correct, a VRT agent effectively made a promise on my behalf without fulfilling the requirement I set out to do it. If the agent is going to disappoint the user, own it. You can keep the hot potato. They made it VRT's business.
Do we have any policy to apply noindex to files?
Don't know, don't care. Irrelevant.Does it make sense to create a precedent?
The only precedent we'd be creating is that Alexis Jazz refuses to noindex files as part of a vanity request for notable people when the users' identity hasn't been verified by VRT. And that precedent has hereby been created anyway. Is user verification required or reasonable?
In order to aid with noindex requests, I require it. To me, this is reasonable. Maybe other editors don't require it. Maybe other editors think it's unreasonable. That's fine, you do you. But I am under no obligation to do anything. If any editor has completely arbitrary requirements to help others, that's fine. If any user offers to categorize up to eleven files of the requesters' choice, but the request MUST be made in the form of a haiku, that's totally valid. Is that reasonable? Who cares. It's an offer. Take it or leave it. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:52, 17 February 2026 (UTC)

Request for VRT ticket update – Philip E. Cryer image
[edit]Hello, I am requesting assistance with a VRT ticket related to the photo of Philip E. Cryer on Wikimedia Commons. Permission was obtained from Washington University, and the email permission process was completed. A VRT ticket was issued and the information was submitted, but the issue with the file still appears unresolved. I am new to the Commons permissions process and may have made an error when submitting the ticket information. I have attempted the process twice. Could a VRT volunteer please review the ticket and advise or update the file status if appropriate? Ticket#ticket:2025111710405455 file:Philip-cryer-_portrait_2.jpg. Let me know what I need to do please or perhaps you all could fix the issue ? Best RPK2000 (talk) 06:23, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- Ticket wa now answered, permission sender previously failed to advise which file the permission applies to. --Krd 06:57, 4 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Krd:
- Hello,
- Thank you very much for the quick response. I may have misunderstood your message, so I just want to be sure I’m following correctly. Does this mean the original permission email did not specify which file the permission applied to? If so, should the license owner send another message confirming that the permission applies to Philip-cryer_portrait_2.jpg?
- Also, would I need to request an undelete in order to restore the image? If so, could you please advise how I would go about getting the image back on the page?
- Thank you again for your help and for taking the time to guide me through the process—I really appreciate the opportunity to learn. RPK2000 (talk) 06:13, 5 March 2026 (UTC)
- Permission sender failed to provide the Commons URL. The file will be restored (if deleted) by a VRT member once permission is verified. Nemoralis (talk) 02:07, 8 March 2026 (UTC)

[edit]Could a VRT member check to see whether VTR received the email being referred to at en:Talk:Robert Levin (writer)#Request edit on 28 February 2026? The subject of the English Wikipedia article en:Robert Levin (writer) (at least they're claiming to be the subject) is trying to sort out the licensing of File:Robert Levin (writer).jazz critic and author of multiple collections of fiction and commentary..jpg, a photo they're claiming was taken by their son. Their last post on the talk page of the English Wikipedia article seems to be include a copy-paste version of the email their son is supposed to have sent VRT. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:56, 7 March 2026 (UTC)
- Yes: ticket:2026030310007933. I asked some questions in the ticket for verification. Nemoralis (talk) 02:03, 8 March 2026 (UTC)

- @Nemoralis: meaning that they need to confirm that the internal link above is what they were talking about, or that they need to provide some external link? Because now that this is deleted, they wouldn't be able to look now at the internal link and know whether it is the correct photo or not.
- @~2026-14975-06: do you have an account, in which case this would be much clearer if you posted here using that. And, if not, are you the person with whom VRT was corresponding? It's hard to make sense of this without knowing your role in the matter. - Jmabel ! talk 03:56, 10 March 2026 (UTC)

- @HNBS Hi - not a VRT person, however this appears to be regarding ticket #2026010710006207. Your newer uploads seems to be marked with Template:Permission received which means that VRT received your email and are either still verifying permissions or need something else from you. I'll let someone else from VRT explain - thank you! applecuckoo (he/him) 21:23, 11 March 2026 (UTC)
- tl;dr what is the question or request? --Krd 07:34, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Krd they wanted to make sure all files covered under ticket:2026010710006207 didn't end up getting deleted applecuckoo (he/him) 07:52, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- The ticket is still open, in a small language and consists of more than 60 entries. I'm not sure if this is achievable in short time. Images can be undeleted as soon as the permission is verified. --Krd 08:15, 12 March 2026 (UTC)

Hi Krd. Could you please answer very clearly? I have sent to Noticeboard here, 3 permissions all in english from my sister and 2cousins. At the 3 of march I sent the same 3 permissions to Permission Commons .....will this be enough? Theese last 3 permissions are all in english..no small languages? You should not look at the other "entries" just these last 3 ones? — Preceding unsigned comment added by HNBS (talk • contribs) 15:25, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- @Krd (or anyone else in VRT) - upon closer inspection there have been quite a few previous tickets regarding this artist - namely ticket:2019060210001172 (on File:Den Barmhjertige Samaritan. Elisa Maria Boglino. Tusch med turkis Akvarel. ca 1980.jpg), ticket:2024102210009501 (as seen on File:Den Barmhjertige Samaritaner.jpg, and ticket:2018100510004327) (as seen on File:De Gode Gerninger. Elisa Maria Boglino. Foto af Fresko (oprindeligt i farver) , ødelagt under bombardement. 1928.jpg). Are any of these tickets broad enough to apply retroactively? applecuckoo (he/him) 18:41, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- as for @HNBS, please wait patiently. VRT (the people who operate permission-commons) are just volunteers and it might take them a while to process the tickets. I've asked above if any of your tickets from previous years already apply here. If they get deleted again, they will be put back up as soon as they process the permissions. Thanks! applecuckoo (he/him) 18:44, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- Thank you so much applecuckoo....it is so difficult for me all this , and I am sorry for all the mess I create....we are four copyright holders now. We are all grandchildren to the artist . Ciopone. (talk) 19:39, 12 March 2026 (UTC)

Craig Vye picture
[edit]Hi - could someone verify if an email was received regarding a picture of Craig Vye? He (or someone claiming to be him) uploaded a better image of himself as File:C1A6878.jpg and I pointed him towards the VRT process to get that cleared. His last reply said that permissions have been sent to VRT, so I've just put the permission pending template on the image for now. Thank you! applecuckoo (he/him) 07:30, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
- We generally don't do that as searching is too expensive in time. If they sent it, it likely was received, and they got a auto-reply. If not, then not. Krd 07:32, 12 March 2026 (UTC)
Максим Мальков (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log) , who was the uploader and who wasn't a VRT member, added this ticket to 6 files (an example). He describes himself as the heir to the one of the people depicted's archive, what doesn't make any of them the authors of the photographs. In fact, some of them were made by Moisej Nappelbaum (d:Q1781790), who died in 1958, and whose post-1917 works are not free until 2033. I'd like to understand whether his actions are justified, given that his talk page is full of messages about clear copyright violations. Komarof (talk) 11:25, 14 March 2026 (UTC)
