Fagus orientalis complex

[edit]

Hi @MPF, I saw (by chance) you included in the description of Fagus orientalis range map the species F. hohenackeriana and F. caspica. Moreover, you created a new map for F. hohenackeriana. If you agree, I would like to be involved in case one of my species map needs to be modified. I'm always happy to update/correct them and usually I can do it quickly. For the map of F. orientalis, I can propose to A) create one map with three colours detecting the three species ranges of F.orientalis complex, B) create 3 new separated maps. What do you think? Giovanni Caudullo (talk) 11:21, 7 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Giovanni Caudullo - grazie! My preference would be to produce them as three separate maps; or, at least, two, as there is a problem with F. caspica as Kew POWO have not (yet) formally accepted it, so it is in a state of limbo. A multicolour map would be interesting to have too, but might be better with all four species (adding F. sylvatica). - MPF (talk) 23:59, 8 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi @MPF. I created a map showing the three new species belonging to Fagus orientalis complex (unfortunately I made a typo in the file name, I've already asked to change the page name). I wouldn't add F. sylvatica as this map should be used only for the F. orientalis complex. Including F. sylvatica can clarify their range and genetic overlaps like showed in Denk et al. paper, but I think it is beyond the scope of the map. I will prepare also three separated range maps, I'm sure F. caspica will be accepted soon anyway. - Giovanni Caudullo (talk) 10:18, 21 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Giovanni Caudullo Grazie! That looks perfect; I see the rename has already been done - MPF (talk) 11:49, 21 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Why?

[edit]

Why would you facilitate the renaming of "Behaviour in Australia" to "Behavior in Australia"? We are our own distinct people group with our own distinct spelling. Whilst some of you might think America reigns supreme, we aren't much fans of imperialism in any form. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 12:16, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Chris.sherlock2 ??? I didn't; I've been trying to do the exact opposite! I've been trying to fight against the US 'behavior' steamroller on Commons, though some of the coding complexity makes it extremely difficult. Is this what you're talking about? - MPF (talk) 12:46, 28 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

File:15-09-19 186 Unidentified Campanula, Illulissat, Greenland.jpg

[edit]
Campanula sp., in Ilulissat, Greenland at near 70 degrees North latitude

Hello MPF:

In September of 2015 I was walking along the harbor road in Ilulissat, Greenland at the end of Arctic summer and was surprised to see this clump of blue flowers in bloom among the rocks at the side of the road in a location that is so far north. I took a couple of quick images and when I later uploaded them at the time, I incorrectly thought it was a species of Scottish bluebell or harebells (Campanula rotundifolia).

It is totally unfair for your to be quizzed on something you wrote 18 months ago but on 2025-08-04, you correctly changed the file name and image description to “Unidentified Campanula” as it is not the Campanula rotundifolia species.

I have been looking at this image over the last week and after some research based on leaf shape, flower size and shape and plant location, believe it is the Arctic harebell or Giesecke's harebell (Campanula gieseckiana) species.

Resources:

iNaturalist

Plants of the World Online

Arctic Wildlife Knowledge

I would like to go ahead to change the file name and image description to reflect the Campanula gieseckiana species. While generally knowledgeable with plants, I am not a botanist. Do you have access to any other databases or a Wikipedia botanist user who could affirm this new species?

Best regards,

Gordon Leggett GRDN711 (talk) 00:18, 22 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@GRDN711 - thanks! Yes, that looks right; I've renamed it now 👍 - MPF (talk) 00:25, 22 February 2026 (UTC)Reply
